Civic Projects

The Bedford Garden Club performs continuing work for the community, including efforts on projects with the Bedford VA hospital, Davis School, Job Lane Herb Garden, road beautification and more.

Adding Color to Bedford

We’re sure you’ve seen club members as they work to maintain the 19 traffic islands, corners and public buildings all around Bedford.  At each site, members plant perennials and annuals then mulch, water and weed each site throughout the season, creating four-season interest at many locations. This year, we even added a small vegetable patch at one of our islands!

These gardens and plantings have been designed, tended and beautified by garden club members for many years and benefit the entire Bedford community by providing interesting, engaging and harmonious public landscapes and vistas.

Celebrating Centenarian Jo Champney

Centenarian Jo Champney

Jo Champney, enjoying the view of Bedford’s Job Lane House and its Lillian Dutton Herb Garden, from the vantage point of a bench installed to honor her commitment to the garden since 1978.

A new bench on the Job Lane House lawn was installed last week to honor Bedford centenarian Jo Champney.

Presented by the Bedford Garden Club to mark her 100th birthday and ongoing devotion to the Lillian Dutton Herb Garden, the new bench fulfills Champney’s wish to be able to sit under the shade of the apple tree and gaze upon the garden tucked into the ell of Bedford’s historic house museum.
